APSN 1994 - Hyderabad, India

Hyderabad  The Second Biennial Meeting of the Asian Pacific Society for Neurochemistry was held in Hyderabad, India in September 1994 immediately preceding the International Congress of Biochemistry in New Delhi. The meeting was attended by some 100 Indian and 50 neurochemists from other Asian Pacific countries together with some guests from Europe and North America. Excellent plenary lectures were given by P.N. Tanton (New Delhi) on neural transplantation and George Lunt (Bath) on ligand gated ion channels. There were symposia on neuronal disorders, neuroreceptors, neurotoxicity, neurotransmitter release and action, gene expression, and aging and dementia, together with 2 poster sessions and round table discussions on myelin, nitric oxide, excitatory amino acid and neural plasticity, and drugs and alcoholism. The standard of the poster presentations was particularly high and prizes were awarded to R.J. Rajani (Bangalore), M.S. Bhaskar (Hyderabad) and G.J. Lees (Auckland). The proceedings were published as a supplement to the Journal of Neurochemistry thanks to the generosity of the International Society for Neurochemistry. Kalluri Subba Rao (Hyderabad), the Organising Secretary, and his colleagues on the Programme and Organising Committees were congratulated for an excellent meeting which clearly demonstrated the strength and potential of Indian neurochemistry. Kinya Kuriyama (Kyoto) was elected as the new President of APSN and future meetings agreed to in Beijing (1996), Seoul (1998) and Australia (2000).
